100
Years of Civil Rights Work celebrated on Saturday, June 13
Reno
The Reno-Sparks NAACPs 64th Annual Freedom Fund
Banquet will be held on Saturday, June 13, 2009, at the Atlantis
Casino-Resort-Spa in Reno. Reception begins at 6:00 p.m.,
dinner at 7:00 p.m.
The event commemorates the 100th anniversary of the formation
of the national organization, the National Association for
the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), which was founded
in 1909.
The NAACP has been a champion in the civil rights movement
over the past 100 years. The Reno-Sparks Branch was chartered
in 1945.
Branch President Lonnie Feemster asks community support
for the event.
One hundred years of struggle has been worth the effort.
We need help to solve lingering problems of past and current
racial discrimination. We have contributed a lot to our community
and hope the community will show up to support us at our most
important event, he stated.
The Freedom Fund Banquet will honor Reverend Terry McCray-Hill,
pastor of Bethel AME Church; Bob Fulkerson, Executive
Director of the Progressive
Leadership Alliance of Nevada (PLAN); Sherria Taylor,
Executive Director of ACCEPT (Advancing
Community Cultivation & Enhancing Progressive Transformations);
and Bertha Mullins, Vice-President of Community Development
for Wells Fargo Bank.
